Surveillance camera captures burglar inside Costa Mesa house being fumigated

A bright blue and yellow striped tent and numerous warnings of an ongoing pesticide fumigation did nothing to deter a burglar from breaking into a house on Saturday night and running away with several items, reported officials.

Costa Mesa Police Department spokeswoman Roxi Fyad said the station received a call at 7 p.m. on Saturday from the owner of a residence in the 1700 block of Tanager Drive, indicating that a CCTV system had captured pictures of at least one person inside the house.

“We had someone report that their house was in a tent and that it was being fumigated,” Fyad said on Monday. “They reported that they had cameras installed and that someone was in their house.”

Officers arrived at the scene and established a perimeter around the immediate vicinity. A team of K9 officers from the Seal Beach Police Department was called in to assist, as was a helicopter from the Huntington Beach Police Department.

They cleaned the house but did not locate any suspects, Fyad said. Although no large appliances appeared to have been disturbed during the incident, the owner later reported the loss of a few smaller personal items.

Details of what would have been taken were not immediately available on Monday, and it is not known whether the suspect acted alone or whether several people may have been involved.

Anyone who may have additional information about Saturday’s incident or may have witnessed anything is urged to call the Investigative Services Office of the Costa Mesa Police Department at (714) 754 -5205.
