SKYWAY, Wash. – You almost have to see it to believe it. Surveillance video captures daring thieves sawing through a mailbox stand on their perch.
This theft occurred in broad daylight Saturday afternoon in the Lakeridge area of Skyway.
These thieves even attempted to take the entire mailbox stand.
But it was so big and heavy that they couldn’t put it in the car, so they knocked it down and took out the mail.
The video shows how the theft happened. Three people inside this vehicle appeared to be breaking this Skyway neighborhood overlooking Lake Washington. It was 4:40 p.m. Saturday afternoon, moments after the mail was delivered.
“Some of our neighbors actually crossed paths with the suspects,” Tyler Roberts said.
He and his wife weren’t home when the scammers showed up. But he had intentionally pointed his surveillance camera at the mailboxes.
“Did you think something like this could happen?” said Tyler. “Yeah, I saw other mail thefts in the area then. I saw it. I heard about it.
The camera captured it all. First you see the thieves appear to check the area. Then they settle on a group of four mailboxes including Tyler’s. And at work.
A man begins sawing the stand. It stops for a few seconds, then resumes. He ends up making his way through.
Then he turns over the boxes and begins to take out the mail. He and an accomplice try to get the box into the Audi, but they can’t.
So he gets the rest of the mail. But they are not done. They come back to try again, but again they can’t put the box in the vehicle. They leave.
But they are still not finished. They dip the mailbox in a liquid, presumably to wipe off their fingerprints.
Now the stall is in Tyler’s garage, and he and his neighbors are already planning to fill the hole left by new, sturdier mailboxes.
“We’re building a platform for a new group of steel mailbox units,” Tyler said. “This one will be much more secure.”
But it won’t be cheap. He says the new mailbox could cost around $2,000. He and 12 other neighbors plan to split the cost.
Meanwhile, the King County Sheriff’s Office says mail thefts have actually more than halved in the county from a year ago.
