Two people were injured after being hit by a newly installed police surveillance camera in Iganga municipality. The incident happened along the Nakigo road on Wednesday.

The victims who have not yet been identified were heading towards the area of the Iganga Court of First Instance.

It is reported that the surveillance camera collapsed on the victims around noon. The victims were rushed to the emergency unit of Iganga general hospital for further treatment.

Martin Sooka, a local resident, claims the camera pole collapsed due to high winds. “We had strong winds all day. I suspect that was the cause of the collapsed metal pole,” said Sooka.

Julius Mutyabule, a local motorcyclist, said the concrete holding the pole had weakened due to continued exposure to running water.

Mutyabule adds that the post was erected near an overflowing drainage system and that this could have weakened its concrete support surface.

The offices of the Busoga East Regional Police Headquarters are located about 50 meters from where the surveillance camera collapsed. Police authorities have since declined to comment on the case.
