Perle Fiber media converters enable a hybrid video surveillance system using both analog and IP cameras

Princeton, NJ, October 16, 2021 – ( – “The transition of a video surveillance system from analog to IP is rarely an exercise in extraction and replacement,” says Geoff Cottle, engineer at Crime & Fire Defense Systems. “A hybrid solution of old analog cameras and new digital IP cameras maximizes the investment already made in existing equipment while taking advantage of the new features that IP cameras have to offer, such as low latency, better image quality and zoom.

An example of a hybrid monitoring system can be found at the Dragon Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) facility in Wales, UK. As the handling of LNG is dangerous due to its extremely flammable nature, the reception, storage and regasification of LNG is only carried out at two sites in the UK. This activity monitoring is a surveillance system made up of analog Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras that transmit data over a single-stranded multimode fiber via modulators allowing analog-to-fiber conversion.

When several cameras had to be replaced, Crime & Fire, Dragon LNG’s turnkey solution provider, tried to find replacements. Cottle comments: “Replacement analog cameras could not be sourced because the industry had moved to IP-based digital cameras. We knew we needed to move to an IP-based surveillance system but, due to budget constraints and the fact that many analog cameras still had a long way to go, it had to be a gradual process.

Once the new IP cameras were purchased, Crime & Fire installed Perle fiber converters to bridge the connectivity between the camera’s copper Ethernet interface and the single-strand multimode fiber surveillance network.

“By installing the Perle Fiber Media Converters, we can integrate the new IP cameras into the existing surveillance system. The new cameras work alongside existing analog cameras for the time being. This hybrid configuration is flexible and scalable, allowing us to easily integrate additional IP cameras as needed, ”concludes Cottle.
