Almost a year after winning an overwhelming majority in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s own Smart Cities Mission in June 2015, which is one of the NDA government’s most ambitious projects to this day. The government has identified up to 100 cities in different parts of the country to be transformed into smart cities. The creation of a smart city involves the physical, institutional, social and economic infrastructure of cities, which would consequently improve people’s living standards and attract investment. The idea behind the development of smart cities essentially sets in motion a virtuous cycle of growth and development.

Smart cities offer solutions to our biggest urban challenges and solve problems such as rising crime rates and traffic congestion. But how can a city be smart without being safe and secure? Although several factors are driving the development of the smart city, one of the main catalysts for the revolution has been the emergence of advanced security and surveillance tools and equipment such as 4K and ultra HD surveillance cameras. . At the heart of the smart city initiative is ensuring strong security and safety for citizens, and advanced video surveillance solutions have a crucial role to play in this regard.

Thanks to constant innovations, we now have the possibility to choose from a wide range of CCTV cameras. The range varies from IP cameras to night vision to color night vision cameras and the added ‘smart’ factor is that these can be controlled via our mobile phones. In fact, the latest IP-enabled smart high-definition cameras with seamless integration and universal monitoring software will play a greater role in improving city life, which is the core of the concept of smart cities.

Not just at the nuclear level, but these tools provide adequate safety and trigger a sense of security even at the institutional level. For example, an integrated CCTV mechanism can improve and broaden the scope of effective criminal investigation and traffic management.

Besides the obvious security advantage, smart surveillance products can also play an important role in providing more advanced public services in smart cities. For example, a smart CCTV mechanism has the potential to automatically transmit information about a traffic hazard to multiple systems that can instantly advise authorities and drivers themselves to take alternative routes. According to a study, the Indian CCTV market size is expected to surpass $2.4 billion by the end of this year or early next year. It is now up to players in the field to prepare to exploit the huge business opportunity.

One of the most important benefits of equipping a smart city with smart security and surveillance products is the early detection of threats, which would eventually lead to rapid remedial action. The wide range of smart security and surveillance products, tools and equipment can leverage artificial intelligence, IoT technology and geospatial positioning to make smart cities smarter. With connected systems and big data, smart cities are undoubtedly the future of urban development. And finally, security and surveillance actors and the field have the prowess of enabling authorities to make better and informed decisions regarding infrastructure, urban planning, fleet optimization, intelligent transport, security public and operational and environmental sustainability.
