By Aaron Humes: In recent years, surveillance cameras, both private and public, have been located throughout Belize City. Their images have sometimes been used to condemn, but more often than not they are turned off or not pointed in the right place at the right time.

Former National Security Minister John Saldivar wants to change that, using social media for a fully integrated surveillance system over the old capital, with further expansion to district towns.

Saldivar argues that “one of the main contributors to the reduction in the crime rate is the increase in the conviction rate. Improving evidence gathering, investigation and prosecution is one of the main contributors to the increased conviction rate. An important tool in gathering evidence, investigating and prosecuting is a surveillance system. “

He reveals that when he was minister, such a system was proposed for $ 30 million, but the government could not find the money.

If we can borrow more than half a billion dollars in just two years due to the pandemic, says Saldivar, then such an investment should be small potatoes as a tool to solve the crime crisis and restore confidence. public.

“Crime is a crisis for Belize. I felt then as I now feel that there is not too much investment to ensure the safety of citizens. We even considered a national security obligation. Funding for any public program or project is a priority. This has been proven during this pandemic. The safety of citizens is a priority. … Conviction is a deterrent against crime, ”he concluded.
